FAQs

All of our programs are customized to suit your needs. We will address any issues specific to you and your dog. Therefore, your training will vary both in the structure and layout of the program as well as in the cost and duration of the training. Each of our training programs is custom-tailored to your specific situation. We do not take a cookie-cutter approach to training. We will not sell you training that you do not need. We will create a program just for you that will help you achieve all of your goals.

At Positive Tails Dog Training we start our programs by meeting with you and your dog. This is an opportunity for you to evaluate our training, ask any questions that you have about our training and programs, and see our training in action. It also gives us the chance to gain insight into the unique circumstances that affect your dog’s training. We take notes on your lifestyle and your dog’s specific needs so that we develop a personalized training plan that best suits your dog’s temperament and your specific training goals. The Consultation appointment will last forty minutes to an hour. The only investment required for the Consultation is your time. There is no cost or obligation associated with our free Consultation.
The Consultation Allows:

  • a time for you to tell us everything you love about your dog as well as all of the things you’d like to improve
  • a time for you to ask us direct questions about the realistic expectations of training for your dog
  • a time for you to talk with us and decide if our training philosophies are a good fit for you
  • a time for us to share all of the different types of training approaches to consider
  • a time where we can make quality recommendations for our training programs
  • a time for you to make a qualified decision based on your personal experience after seeing our training in action

Bottom line: it’s a “Positive Tails Test Drive” that is a must anytime you are considering training your dog.

There are lots of different types of dog training. Some trainers specialize in service dogs, search and rescue, police dogs…We focus on family dogs. We love working with families with dogs of all types, all behaviors, breeds, and ages. The characteristics that all of our clients have in common is a strong desire to make the most of their dog training experience, they want to learn, and are easy to teach. Sometimes their goals are very basic and sometimes they have major needs. Often their dogs are interfering with their family’s happiness; they aren’t enjoying their dogs as much as they want. Sometimes they’ve tried dog training before and have already noticed that not all types of dog training are created equally. Most dog training programs aren’t set up to help you reach your goals all in one complete program and most training methods don’t work for the two most common needs; reliability around distractions, particularly when the dog is off-leash, and resolving undesirable behaviors.

At Positive Tails, we use Attention-Based Training to modify behaviors and teach dogs new skills and proper manners. This approach to training allows your Positive Tails trainer to use a variety of attention-based modalities such as leashes, flat collars, food and toys. Just as in sports and academics, no one is ever punished into excellence. We teach with a healthy level of clear guidance, direction, and enthusiastic praise. Through repetition and proper progression, excellence and proficiency are then achieved. We are best known for our off-leash results around distractions.
We address many different areas of training, including but not limited to:

  • Barking
  • Chewing
  • Jumping
  • Aggression
  • Leash pulling
  • Housebreaking
  • Advanced & Basic Obedience

Our training is safe, free of confrontation, conflict, and confusion. There is no yelling or punishment in our training progressions. We direct our focus on generating and maintaining a happy and relaxed attitude in all of our dogs.

Positive Tails Dog Training offers different types of training models with a variety of programs within each model. Each program is modified to the specific needs of your dog, your family, and your circumstances.
We offer:

  • Immersion Programs (a.k.a. Board & Train)
  • Specialty Off-Leash Group Classes (Exclusively for Graduates of our Immersion Training Program)
  • Specialty Off-Leash Private Training (Exclusively for Graduates of our Immersion Training Program)

Your success is ensured with our results-oriented year-round support, including phone / email / text consulting, and follow-up visits as needed.

All of our training programs begin with an Immersion Phase, where we do the hard work for you. The Immersion training is followed by one-on-one private training sessions for you and your dog to teach you how to continue with the training. We’ll keep working with you and your dog for a specific number of lessons and, depending on the program that you choose, we’ll do brush-up lessons whenever you need them at no extra charge.

The first step is to schedule a time to chat with me (Jennifer) so we can go over all of the details, we can make sure that the program you are choosing is appropriate for your dog and your training goals and so that I can give you all of the details about our training methods, availability, investments, etc. Call our office to schedule a free consultation or use our handy contact form and we’ll call you.
